The PRAXIS test: Everything You Need to Know

What is the PRAXIS test?

PRAXIS is a series of tests designed to evaluate the readiness of prospective educators to teach in the classroom. Administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the PRAXIS tests measure teacher candidates' pedagogical knowledge and subject-specific content knowledge needed for teaching.

what is praxis

There are three types of Praxis tests you may need to take to qualify for certification in your state, each type focusing on different educational expertise:

Praxis Core Tests (Praxis I)

These tests measure academic skills in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. They were designed to provide comprehensive assessments that measure the skills and content knowledge of candidates entering teacher preparation programs.

Types of questions on the Praxis Core Tests

  • Single-selection selected-response questions
  • Multiple-selection selected-response questions
  • Numeric-entry questions, and
  • Essay questions in the Core Writing test

The Praxis Core tests are computer delivered and may be taken either as three separate tests on separate days or as one combined test. Individual scores are reported for reading, mathematics and writing on both the individual and the combined tests.

Praxis Elementary Education: Content Knowledge for Teaching (CKT) Assessment

Designed for teacher candidates seeking a generalist elementary school license, the CKT assesses knowledge and teaching skills in multiple subjects. There are four CKT subtests: Reading and Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Types of questions on these subtests include:

  • Single-selection selected-response questions
  • Multiple-selection selected-response questions, and
  • Numeric-entry questions

Candidates can take the subtests separately or as a combined test. All of them are computer delivered.

Praxis Subject Tests (Praxis II)

Praxis Subject tests measure subject-specific content knowledge, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills, that K-12 educators need for beginning teaching. They include over 90 different tests ranging from Agriculture to World Languages. Most of the tests, except for the Braille Proficiency test, are computer delivered. They range from 1 hour to 4 hours long.

Selected-response questions on the Praxis Subject tests

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Typing in an entry box. When the answer is a number, you may be asked to enter a numerical answer. Some questions may have more than one place to enter a response.
  • Clicking check boxes. You may be asked to click check boxes instead of an oval when more than one choice within a set of answers can be selected.
  • Clicking parts of a graphic. In some questions, you will select your answers by clicking on a location (or locations) on a graphic such as a map or chart, as opposed to choosing your answer from a list.
  • Clicking on sentences. In questions with reading passages, you may be asked to choose your answers by clicking on a sentence (or sentences) within the reading passage.
  • Dragging and dropping answer choices into targets on the screen. You may be asked to select answers from a list of choices and drag your answers to the appropriate location in a table, paragraph of text or graphic.
  • Selecting answer choices from a drop-down menu. Selecting answer choices from a drop-down menu. You may be asked to choose answers by selecting choices from a drop-down menu (e.g., to complete a sentence).
  • Essay or constructed-response questions

The number of questions and length of each test varies depending on the test.

With Certify Teacher test prep all Praxis test question types are covered besides multiple choice:

  • Typing in an entry box
  • Clicking checkboxes
  • Clicking parts of a graphic
  • Clicking on sentences
  • Dragging and dropping answer choices
  • Selecting answer choices from a drop-down menu
  • Constructed-response or open-response items

Caution: Other test preps out there don't carry these types of questions and they won't tell you. We've got you covered.

Constructed-response questions

Some Praxis tests consist of constructed-response questions. These are questions that require you to demonstrate your knowledge of the subject area by providing an in-depth written response of your own. Read the question carefully before you begin to write your response to ensure that you address all components of the question.

Your response should conform to the conventions of Standard English. Your written response should be your original work, written in your own words, and not copied or paraphrased from some other work. You may, however, use citations when appropriate.

Exhibits, when included, are presented in a tabbed format onscreen. You will have the ability to move between exhibits by clicking on the tab labels at the top of the screen. An on-screen text box is provided. You type your response in this text box.

Constructed-response questions are scored on a 0-3 scale where 3 is the highest score. To obtain the highest score your response must demonstrate you have a thorough understanding of the subject area. A Score of 3 response

  • clearly and specifically answers all parts of the question.
  • shows a thorough understanding of any stimulus material presented.
  • exhibits a strong knowledge of the subject matter.
  • provides strong supporting evidence and rationales.

Be sure to write about the assigned topic(s) in the question and remember to review your work and make any changes you think will improve your responses.

No worries. We've got several constructed-response items in the test prep that mimic the type of questions and scenarios you will most likely encounter in the real exam, each listing sample responses fully written and scored from 3 (strong response) to 0 (very weak response) that show you how you should write your responses based on the criteria that you will be evaluated in the real exam. With Certify Teacher test prep, you have opportunities for lots of practice with:

  • organizing your thoughts quickly,
  • addressing each prompt,
  • supporting your statements with descriptive details
  • including the use of data provided in the prompt

With many opportunities to practice in the Certify Teacher prep, you will write with confidence to the highest rubric score in this section of the real exam. We've got you covered.

How Do I Prepare for the PRAXIS?

You should not attempt the PRAXIS test until you're scoring 90% or higher in at least 3 Certify Teacher practice exams within 2 weeks of the official test date. Turn the Study Plan Tracker feature in your Certify Teacher test prep on and follow the recommendations of this Study Plan to complete assignments that target content you were found deficient so you can master them.

In addition, read the explanatory commentaries for all answer choices, including the rationales that explain the incorrect answers because these commentaries may explain a skill or clarify knowledge that will answer a question in the real exam. Take advantage of all the resources available to you in the Certify Teacher test prep so you can take the real Praxis exam with confidence and be successful in it.

Where Do I Take the PRAXIS?

The Praxis Core Tests and the Praxis Subject tests have deadlines throughout the year, while other Praxis exams are scheduled through more limiting windows.

You should search for testing centers for your desired exam, test date, and cost on the Praxis testing service website, which includes online or "home testing" options.

In order to qualify for the home test option, you must live in the U.S. or a U.S. territory and meet specific requirements regarding equipment and environment.

How is the PRAXIS Scored?

Scoring Praxis exams involve scoring both selected-response and constructed-response questions, each with its own scoring scale. Selected-response questions are scored by computer on a scale from 100 to 200. Each selected-response question answered correctly is worth one raw point.

Constructed-response questions are scored by education professionals in the appropriate content area on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being the highest score and 1 being the lowest.

After taking the exam, your score reports are available in your ETS account approximately 21 days after the exam date.

Is the PRAXIS test hard?

Educational background, familiarity with the material, test- taking skills, and overall preparation are some of the many factors to consider in predicting how hard a given Praxis test is for any specific person. Add to that the fact that there are over 90 different Praxis tests.

Although some test-takers may breeze through one or more of these exams, many will find at least some of them challenging. The most recent data available for the Praxis Elementary Education test, a content knowledge exam required in 18 states, indicates that only 46% of test takers will pass all four subjects the first time they take the exam.

What if I don't pass my PRAXIS test?

As far as ETS is concerned, if you are unable to pass a Praxis test on your first attempt, you may retake the exam after 21 days (ETS has no limit on how many times the Praxis can be taken). However, before applying for a retake be sure you are in compliance with the rules and regulations of your education agency.

Before retaking a Praxis exam, identify what went wrong in the original exam. Did you run out of time to revise? Did stress get the best of you in the exam room? Examine your score report and identify the content categories you scored low.

Certify Teacher test prep approximates the environment of the real PRAXIS test with similar interface, navigation, timing and prompt settings, question formats, question types and content. The full- length practice tests in the prep test mimic the real PRAXIS exam and can help you with your retake. You get a comprehensive performance analysis after every full-length exam you take. It creates a Study Plan for you and provides you with a solution to master content on which you need improvement.
